Peregrine Falcon sets up home at Newsprinters

FULL STORY
Newsprinters, the newspaper manufacturing subsidiary of News International, has announced that an unusual resident has set up home at its Eurocentral plant near Motherwell in Scotland.

A Peregrine Falcon has established its nest in the Newsprinters sign at the front of the factory, and has become a regular sight for staff.

The discovery of the new inhabitant comes as the RSPB reports a 40 per cent rise in attacks on wild birds of prey. The charity received 262 reports of illegal shooting, trapping and nest destruction during 2007, up from 185 in 2006. Once dangerously low in numbers, the peregrine population is now healthy and resident in the UK year-round. The birds usually live in areas of rocky sea cliff upland regions.

The Newsprinters Peregrine, which will be named in a staff competition, may have been attracted by the planted reserve at the Eurocentral site. Set aside for plants and wildlife, the plot has been returned to nature and is frequented by smaller birds that form part of the Peregrine’s prey.

Kevin Agnew, health, safety and environment manager at Newsprinters, said, 'We are implementing a raft of environmental initiatives at all of our new print sites, but we had not expected to play host to wild birds of prey as well. It’s a great privilege and everyone is keeping an eye on the sign to make sure that our special guest is safe.'

Newsprinters is the new print division of News International. Three brand new printing plants, equipped with state-of-the-art triple-width printing presses, were available for contract printing through Newsprinters progressively from mid-2007.

News International is the main UK subsidiary of the global media company News Corporation. News International subsidiary Times Newspapers Ltd publishes The Times and The Sunday Times, and the subsidiary News Group Newspapers publishes The Sun and News of the World.
